Whether you’re wanting to get a haircut or a new hairstyle, describing exactly what you want to your hairdresser and determining how much time you will need for the appointment go hand in hand.

Many times, we underestimate how long certain treatments or services can take. Other times, we may spend most of our Saturday in the salon chair and wonder why so much time is spent on the service.

Knowing how much time to allocate for a treatment or service makes the salon experience much more enjoyable, leaving the client satisfied with the experience as a whole.

HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD WE DESIGNATE FOR A TRIM OR CUT?

Depending on the stylist and their client’s hair type, as well as the desired look, a trim may take as little as twenty-five to thirty minutes for shorter hair. Longer hair is generally scheduled for thirty to forty-five-minute blocks, including shampoo and dry time. Extra-long and thick hair may take up to an hour. Generally, men’s cuts take fifteen to thirty minutes.

Whether the stylist is a master stylist or recently graduated, this may determine the time she takes for an appointment as well, but, regardless, the actual cutting process uses the least amount of the appointment time. The shampoo and drying time take most of the time block, the best parts!

HOW LONG SHOULD A BLOWOUT TAKE?

A blowout is generally scheduled for thirty to forty-five minutes. Of course, depending on the length and thickness of hair, as well as the desired style, time could be slightly less or more. Wash and sets tend to take about thirty minutes and a full blowout with curls will most likely be scheduled for a forty-five-minute time block.

HOW LONG SHOULD A HIGHLIGHT TAKE START TO FINISH?

There are several options available when choosing a highlight service. A full highlight, of course, depending on hair length, thickness, and desired look, can take as little as an hour and fifteen minutes or up to two hours. Add additional time if a retouch of the base color is needed as well.

Partial highlights or foils added to the crown and around the face area take less time. Expect to spend forty-five minutes to an hour and fifteen for a partial highlight.

Additional time should be added if toning. Express toning usually takes five to ten minutes at the shampoo bowl.

HOW LONG SHOULD A BALAYAGE TAKE?

This process can take longer than a standard highlight service because of the technical differences. Balayage takes a completely different approach than the standard foiled highlight. Teasing the hair for a softer look and foil placements are responsible for the additional time. That being said, the full process for a new client will take two to two and a half hours, sometimes three hours depending on the length and level expectation.  A returning client is usually less time.

HOW LONG SHOULD AN ALL OVER COLOR TAKE?

The application should take between an hour to an hour and a half. Grey coverage clients could spend additional time processing for the best results.

All over color from new growth to ends depends on length, so expect to schedule an hour and a half to an hour and forty-five minutes. This is for deposit color. When lifting, one could expect to spend an additional fifteen to twenty minutes more for processing.

WHAT ABOUT A RE-TOUCH?

A re-touch application can be done in forty-five minutes to an hour for short hair and an hour and fifteen to an hour and a half for longer hair.
